How do you handle it when your behavior contradicts what you believe? Understanding: Briefly summarize how all we learned in the chapters of Hebrews before todays lesson sets the stage for how we actually behave. Focus especially on Jesus superiority and His death on the cross. Verses 19 and 20 say something wonderful about access to God. Read Ephesians 3:11-12 which also talks about access. How are boldness and confidence the antidote to discouragement? How does that affect you? One worship song goes along with todays passage by singing of Jesus Come into the holy of holies, enter by the blood of the lamb. Compare that to Leviticus 16:16-17 which describes the Old Testament high priest. What are the differences you see between the high priest in Old Testament times and Jesus? How does it affect you? Verse 22 says we should DRAW NEAR to God. Before todays sermon, what did you think drawing near meant? How does todays teaching change your understanding of drawing near? Todays passage described our hope in the Lord. Read Romans 8:24-25. Do you insist on seeing your hope? What is the antidote here? How does it affect you? Verse 23 says to hold UNSWERVINGLY (or without wavering) to the hope we possess. Pastor Ted said, Were not very good at hoping, especially when we talk about doing it Gods way and in his time. So now read Romans 5:2-5. What are the steps which produce hope? Do you see an area of your life in which God is working or has worked through the steps in your life to produce hope? How does that encourage you? Application: Verses 24 & 25 spoke of spurring someone on toward love and good deeds. You may need to look for ways to encourage those around you to spur them on to love and good deeds. This means coming alongside someone and motivating them to get involved. This week, start by thinking of one person you could encourage in this way, and take that first step to spur them on. Try scripture memory. Pick a verse to memorize, and let it take root in your mind and heart. Let it grow inside you, and youll see a difference. This week start each day with 5 MINUTES of prayer just 5 minutes, and then build from there. And try one more thing: Be open to Gods leading throughout your day, so that when God puts someone or something on your heart, pray right then and there. Youll be drawing near to Him when you do this. Consider the Draw Near prayer group which meets every Thursday at 7pm for prayer, over in the office across the street. (Except for Room 116 in the main chapel building on June 9 and 16) They pray for the church, for the staff, for all of you. They pray over the prayer requests that we receive each week. Theyd love to have you come out and join them. Even if you dont like to pray out loud, theyd welcome you into the group. * , C E L [ \ ] t u v y z | }pcVcI
